Last Chance to Attend the Oscar Romero Awards Ceremony and Support Asylum Seekers in Queensland

Mercy Community’s Romero Centre is gearing up to host its annual Oscar Romero Awards Ceremony, an event that celebrates the resilience and contributions of people seeking asylum in Queensland. With over 100 million individuals displaced worldwide, this event aims to shed light on the triumphant journeys of those forced to leave their homes due to war, natural disasters, poverty, or persecution.

Last year alone, more than 16,000 individuals sought safety and security in Australia, with 3,500 finding refuge in Queensland. The Romero Centre, which supports approximately 440 destitute people seeking asylum at any one time, operates solely on the compassionate mercy of the wider community, as it receives no government support.

The Oscar Romero Awards Ceremony, taking place on Saturday, October 28, at All Hallows School, promises to be an unforgettable evening. Attendees will have the opportunity to bid on amazing artwork and great prizes at the auction, while enjoying top-notch entertainment, food, and drink. Tickets for this inspiring event can be purchased here.

Dr. Rod Kippax, Mercy Community Inclusion Manager, emphasised the significance of the ceremony, stating, “The Oscar Romero Awards Ceremony is a chance for the Brisbane community to share in the celebration of the inspirational journeys and the unrecognised contribution that people seeking asylum make every day to Queensland. Come along to be inspired, moved, and feel the joy of a community that deeply understands that love has no borders.”

The event serves as a platform to honour the extraordinary efforts of people seeking asylum and their human rights advocates. By attending, individuals can show their support for these resilient individuals and contribute to the ongoing work of the Romero Centre. All proceeds from the event will directly benefit the Centre’s programs and services, ensuring that those seeking asylum receive the support they desperately need.

Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of a community that values compassion, inclusivity, and justice. Join us at the Oscar Romero Awards Ceremony on October 28 and help make a difference in the lives of people seeking asylum in Queensland. Together, we can create a world where love knows no borders.
